Because how can you not love a baseball player named "Bubba"?
Paul Janish got a couple of plate appearances today, but no official at-bats. He hit a sac fly, and walked. So he was 0 for 0 with a RBI and a run scored. That means his OBP improved; he's now .306 / .409 / .500, for a .909 OPS.
Yeesh. That makes him one of the best hitters on the team this spring. Spring training stats don't mean all that much, but it's nice to see the patience and power again anyway.
The Reds cut Corky Miller, former Yankee Dioner Navarro, and Daryl Jones yesterday. Pitchers Ryan Madson, Nick Masset, and Jordan Smith will start the season on the DL, which leaves 28 healthy players in camp.
That means Todd Frazier, Juan Francisco, Paul Janish, Willie Harris and Wilson Valdez are fighting for the last two roster spots. I would still be very surprised if it's anyone but Francisco and Valdez who make the roster, but Janish is certainly making his case.
And according to Reds announcer Marty Brennaman, there are a lot of people rooting for Janish to make the roster. Marty said that if you get to know Janish, you become a fan of him as a person. Kind of surprising, since I thought Marty hated everybody. ;-) But he's not the only one who has said things like this. Beat writer Hal McCoy said Janish has an all-star personality, and GM Walt Jocketty said it was hard to send him down last year, because he is one of the best-liked players in the clubhouse.
