Could it be? Could longtime bachelor Derek Jeter finally be tying the knot? That is what's being reported.
The New York Post reports Sunday that the star shortstop and girlfriend Minka Kelly will be married Nov. 5 on Long Island. Acting on a tip, a reporter posing as a bride-to-be spotted an entry reading "JETER wedding" on the calendar for the Oheka Castle in Huntington, N.Y. Sales manager Rick Bellando insisted that a celebrity wouldn't be listed under his real name when the reporter pointed it out.
However, it's not like Jeter is that uncommon a name. I wonder if it might be a different Jeter getting married. The supposed date, Nov. 5, is one day before the date of Game 7 of the World Series that year, at least according to
Wikipedia. Seems unlikely that Jeter would pick that date. One, what if there's a rainout? Two, weddings are a lot of work, and the last thing you'd want is to be dealing with pre-wedding hassles and the World Series at the same time.
UPDATE: That Wikipedia article may be suspect. No postseason schedule has been announced yet. Looks like they are extrapolating it from last season. Last season, opening day was April 6, and the date of Game 7 would have been Nov. 5. This year, opening day will be April 5, so perhaps they are assuming Game 7 will also be one day earlier.
That may not be what actually happens, since
a lot of things going into scheduling. Still, since there is no official schedule yet, why take the chance?
