All Things Bubba

Because how can you not love a baseball player named "Bubba"?

Rice eliminated

I got home in time to catch the last inning of the Rice-LSU game. Kinda wish I hadn't bothered. It looked like the Owls would live to fight another day. They were up 5-2 in the 9th. But the Tigers came from behind to win it with a walkoff double.

I think LSU beat Rice the year Bubba was in the CWS, too. :-P

All in all, this has been a pretty sucky week so far.

And the Mets fired Willie Randolph. In California, in the middle of the night, when most fans were sleeping. Pretty tacky, IMO.

I wonder if Girardi and/or Cashman will be next...

I vote for Cashman! :-)

I too love Bubba. Have a Yankees Bubba t-shirt and got to met him when he came to Albany for a telethon. Somewhere I have a nice pic of us!

As for Joba... He reminds me of Jeff Weaver - a punk with attitude. The whole Joba rules thing last season irrated me. He's what, 22? He shouldn't be that fragile or demanding as a NOBODY. He hasn't earned the respect of the team or fans and we have to bow to him.

But that's just me. Don't mean to offend. I liked players who played hard: Tino, O'Neil, Mo, Jeter. I will take a million Jeters over 1 Joba or A-Rod.

I like Girardi (met him too at the telethon). He was pretty much Cone's personal catcher.

Cashman irritates me. Kevin Brown, The Toad from Japan, Randy Johnson... Too many of his BIG DEALS didn't help the team.

Was it this telethon?

And I'd love to see the photo, if you can find it.

I wasn't offended by your comments about Joba. Just curious. I'm not a big fan or his or anything.

He's such a great story. Native American, poor family, disabled father, no mom, etc. However, I am just a bit tired of hearing about him all the time.

I don't think you can pin the "Joba rules" on him, though. That was Cashman, trying to make sure Torre didn't ruin him. Joba didn't like the Joba rules. I remember one night, a game went into extra innings, and Joba went into the clubhouse and put on his cleats after midnight. He thought since it was technically the next day, he'd be allowed to pitch! :-D

I used to like Cashman, but now I'm starting to wonder. I don't blame Randy Johnson on him. I think that came from Tampa. But he hasn't done much the past couple of years, when he was supposedly in charge.

Yes!! It was! I went that morning to get his autograph and went back after dinner cause he was still there!

That's the pic of us. It's on my blog in February 2006

It's hard to tell what is Cashman and what is Tampa. I'm not sure what I think of Hank.

Wow, great photo!

And hmmm, looks like Cashman is safe for the moment. The Yankees are killing the Padres. The Padres are a pretty bad team, of course. But the Yanks are playing a lot of really bad teams in the next week or two. They'll probably win enough to fool people into thinking they've turned it around. ;-)

Thanks! I posted it to my blog w/ the caption "my new boyfriend". Hehe... He was the ONLY good thing about trading Ventura. I had season tix to the stadium that year and the first game I went to after the trade I wore a Dodgers hat and my Ventura t-shirt in protest. Do you know how hard it was to find a Dodgers hat in Upstate NY?

I totally agree... Cashman always comes out smelling like a rose. So what if the Yanks beat up on the Padres? It's what they do against Boston and other quality teams that matters in the end, cause that's who they'll see if they make it October.

Didn't see it in Feb. 2006, so did a search and found it here. (Your new boyfriend is a hottie. ;-)

This nice photo also came up.

And speaking of Robin Ventura...he's apparently working as a broadcaster now. I saw him on ESPN on Sunday. He did the Rice-Fresno St. College World Series game.

ahhh... sorry I was doing two things at once and probably looked at the wrong link. He is such a cutie!

I caught a couple of Robin's broadcasts. He is funny. I have a yahoogroups for him. Not that there's much out there for him anymore. He also occassionally fills in on White Sox games but I don't have access to those.

I once followed his brother-in-law onto the subway after a game to continue a conversation we were having on the platform. Hehe...

Where is Bubba these days? I haven't been paying much attention outside NY/Boston this year.

Bubba is back home in Houston. He signed with the Reds and the Mariners after leaving the Yankees, but he never played for them. He's had shoulder problems since April of 2007.

When the Yankees were in Houston last weekend, Bubba came to visit his old teammates. That's when we found out he's decided to retire. So we Bubba fans are a bit distraught this week.

awwwww.... I hate it when players I like retire and players like Jamie Moyer and Frank White are STILL playing.

My nephew is a HUGE Astros fan. He watched all the games. Alas, I was working and missed them.

Bubba was so cute at the telethon. The year after him was Scott Proctor and then this year was Shelley Duncan. They were teasing him how appearing @ the telethon seemed to be a curse to Yankee players. So, if they get rid of Duncan, you can blame us.

I remember hearing about "The Curse of the Telethon." Scott Proctor said he wasn't worried. And at the time, I figured he was safe. I couldn't imagine the Yankees would ever get rid of him. Hah.

Bubba is still young. Only 31. He had surgery on his shoulder last July, though, and failed his spring training physical this year. I'm still hoping he'll change his mind. It often takes a full year to recover from shoulder surgery, so he might not be fully healed yet.
