Random Stuff

The Hartford Courant is one of my favorite papers for Yankees coverage. Dom Amore (formerly their beat reporter, now a general baseball reporter in a cost-cutting move) has an interesting article today about Cashman and possible roster moves. Amore seems to think the Yankees should grab Andy Phillips:

Jason Giambi's solid hitting makes first base less of a problem, though the Yankees could use a defensive specialist there (the Reds designated Andy Phillips for assignment Sunday).

And the Yankees' release of Morgan Ensberg has had some knock-on effects. He was picked up by the Cleveland Indians, and assigned to their Triple-A club, the Buffalo Bisons. That meant infielder Aaron Herr, who had been one of the Bisons' most productive players, didn't get any playing time. So they traded him to the Reds. He started for the Louisville Bats last night. Herr was with the Bats all last year, and won an award for being the best utility guy in the league. He may be insurance, in case Andy Phillips doesn't clear waivers (or elects free agency).

And how's this for a goofy baseball promotion? The Grand Prairie (Texas) AirHogs, an independent team, gave away a funeral at a ballgame. Yes, a funeral. I would guess that wasn't something that brought a lot of kids to the ballpark.
