Reds sign Andy Phillips

Andy's heading to Cincinnati. Hopefully, he has better luck there than Bubba did.

Reds sign IF Phillips

The Cincinnati Reds on Friday signed infielder Andy Phillips to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.

Good luck to you, Andy!

UPDATE: Baseball America has updated their transaction list. Still no word on Bubba, but Matt DeSalvo signed with the Braves. Caonabo Cosme signed with the Tiggers.

The Cardinals signed Cliff Politte. (He was the pitcher who was DFA'd the day after Bubba hit a home run off him.)

And the Yankees have signed RHP Scott Strickland, LHP Heath Phillips, LHP Billy Traber, C Jason Brown, and 2B Nick Green.

That article really isn't correct. Andy was the starting 1B (no platoon) before he was injured... I'm surprised guys like Kapler and that nobody 3B the Marlins signed to be their starter get major league deals, while Andy gets a minor league deal.

I bet he makes the team out of spring training.

As it stands, the Reds don't have room on their roster for Andy. Their infield is full, and they have a bunch of reserve infielders. They definitely need more right-handed hitters, but Andy's splits are reversed; he actually hits righties better than lefties, so he doesn't help them against left-handed pitchers.

One possibility is that they are preparing for a possible trade. If their young stud first base prospect, Joey Votto, is traded, they may be planning to platoon a right-handed hitter with lefty Scott Hatteberg at 1B.
