Andy Phillips DFA'd

Andy Phillips has been designated for assignment.

The Molina signing was made official today, and with the roster full, someone had to go.

In order to make room on their 40-man roster, the Yankees designated first baseman Andy Phillips for assignment. A product of the Yankees' farm system who was selected in the seventh round of the 1999 First-Year Player Draft, Phillips fell victim to a numbers crunch at first base, where the Yankees are prepared to enter the 2008 season with Jason Giambi, Shelley Duncan and Wilson Betemit all on the roster and capable of playing the position.

Meanwhile, Andy Pettitte did a 180 degree turnaround, and agreed to come back for the 2008 season. That gives the Yankees a lefty starter, and perhaps some leverage with the Twins.

The Mariano Rivera and Alex Rodriguez signings have still not been announced, and Andy Pettitte is not official yet, either. I think that means at least three more players will be DFA'd soon.

Enough is enough. I can't stand the Yankees anymore. I hope they don't win another title for the next 200 years or so.

Andy and Bubba would both be good fits on the Marlins. They'd be more appreciated and treated better, too. The fans down here would love those kinds of players (like Uggla, Azemaga, etc.)

Damn Yankees! Andy is by far better on defense than anyone they held onto. And he does anything and everything better than Giambi.

Knowing Cashman, the freak of nature's next transaction will be to do something like release Shelley Duncan in order to make roster space to re-sign Kevin Brown to a new 25-year, $50 trillion contract.

I'm kind of surprised the Marlins didn't give Bubba a shot. With their cavernous outfield, they needed someone with good wheels and a good glove. Though I suppose the fact that Girardi wanted Bubba might have been a strike against him, once Girardi was persona non grata in Florida.

Be interesting to see what Andy does. The Yanks would probably offer him a minor league contract, but he may prefer to try his fortunes elsewhere.

It's possible that the winter meetings will result in some trades, clearing space on the roster. Melky and Hughes are both on the roster, so if they're traded for Santana, that will clear up a spot.

I'm angry as hell at this crap. It wasn't coincidence that the Yankees suddenly got better when Andy got called up. And it wasn't coincidence that they weren't as good when he wasn't available in the playoffs. The Yankees need more team-oriented, unselfish players like Andy -- not less of them.

The only thing more screwed up than the Yanks is the BCS (though not by much).
