Bubba the Refrigerator Magnet

(Click for larger version)

YES! Lisa came through for us with a scan of her 1998 Rice baseball refrigerator magnet. With a great photo of Bubba on it. I think it's the first picture of him I've ever seen from before he turned pro. What a skinny little thing he was back then.

(The schedule is interesting. I didn't realize Rice played the WAC. They even had some games against Hawai`i. And they even spelled it with the ʻokina - the symbol used in Hawai`i to represent a glottal stop. I'm impressed!)

I always knew he had a magnetic personality!

Rice was in the WAC for 9 years and won the conference championship each year. The Owls have actually won 12 consecutive conference championships: the last SWC Tournament Championship in 1996, WAC Championships from 1997 through 2005, and CUSA Championships in 2006 and 2007. Bubba was part of the first three championship teams. There are a few pictures of Bubba in the 2007 Rice Baseball Media Guide. Choose the "Rice Baseball History" link and look at pages 69, 70, and 78.

Thanks, great link! Lots of Lance Berkman and some Paul Janish there, too.

I'd forgotten Rice was in the WAC, if I ever knew. The WAC has been in such a state of flux, it's hard to keep up. Especially since I'm on the northeast now, and the games are almost all on too late for me watch.

Hawai`i is the conference champion this year, though! Maybe even BCS bound...
