Wilson & Womack

Former Yankee Craig Wilson has signed with the Braves. He'll platoon with Scott Thorman, probably. I'm glad he found a home.

And former Yankee and Red Tony Womack has signed with the Nationals.

Tony Womack and the Washington Nationals have agreed to a minor league deal that would pay the veteran infielder $600,000 (U.S.) if he makes the 40-man roster.

While I was surprised it took Wilson so long to find a new team, I'm surprised Woe-mack, as Yankees fans often called him, was signed at all. I wish him the best of luck, though. He seemed like a nice guy, and it's not his fault Torre kept putting him in the outfield.

If he gets to start, Wilson will more likely end up platooning in left with Langerhans. Thorman's got pop (you should see this guy take BP), and is a prospective game changer; if he doesn't screw it up, he's going to play everyday.

Thorman's a natural first baseman, yet when the Braves called him up last year, they played him over Langerhans in LF.

Anything's possible. And one of Wilson's strengths is that he can play so many position, including catcher.

That said, he really doesn't have the range for the outfield. That's why Pittsburgh and the Yankees used him mostly at 1B.

And if you look at Thorman's splits, they are the reverse of Wilson's. Thorman's numbers against lefties are pretty awful. Since most pitchers are righties, he could still get most of the starts in a left/right platoon with Wilson.
