Melky SteinbrennerJeez. Even the rookie hazing has gone downhill since Bubba was cut.
Yesterday was Rookie Hazing Day for the Yanks. This year's bumper crop of rookies was made to
dress up like George Steinbrenner.
The seven players - Beam, Melky Cabrera, Jose Veras, Sean Henn, Andy Cannizaro, Jeff Karstens and Kevin Thompson - were dressed in blue blazers, white turtleneck shirts and gray dress slacks. The outfits were topped off by gray-haired wigs and aviator sunglasses.
Lame-itude. Not nearly humiliating enough, IMO.
Let's see...last year, Robby Cano, Chien-Ming Wang, and Mike Vento were dressed up like cheerleaders:
The year before, Bubba and friends had to dress up like Elvis. (Bubba really
didn't need fake sideburns...)
From left: Brad Halsey, Dioner Navarro, Andy Phillips, Scott Proctor and Bubba CrosbyBubba wanted to keep his costume, but it was a rental, and would have cost him $1,000 if he wanted to buy it. Too much for a rookie making league minimum, I guess.
And the year before that, Matsui, Contreras, and DePaula had to dress up like pimps:
Jeter didn't get hazed when he was a rookie. The Yanks were locked in a close division race, so they didn't have time for such frivolity. We'll just have to make do with his appearance as "Candy Soriano" on SNL:
