Uncertainty

September 1, 2006: Columbus Clippers 4, Toledo Mudhens 2

The Clippers have been on a tear this last month, playing spoiler very effectively. The Mudhens needed this game...but didn't get it. The Clippers won it overtime, with a Frank Menechino walkoff homer in the 12th.

It was a rather frustrating night for Bubba fans. He had a decent night at the plate, going 1 for 3, with three (3!) walks. Unfortunately, he also grounded into an inning-ending doubleplay, and got picked off first base, becoming the second out of the 11th inning.

Some interesting news coming out of Columbus. Mitch Jones was designated for assignment. Apparently to get him off the 40-man roster. I assume that was how they made room for Nieves.

Curious that they didn't clear room on the roster by moving Kevin Reese to the 60-day DL. Could they be holding that space for Bubba? Or at least thinking about it...

Kevin Thompson is reportedly very ill with a staph infection. He can't be called up any time soon. That may leave Bubba as the Yankees' only real choice for a backup OFer and pinch-runner.

Bubba would certainly be their best option if they want to win now. He's the best CFer in the Yankees system, at least defensively. And he's gotten to be a decent baserunner, tonight's little adventure notwithstanding.

The Yanks might prefer to use the roster slot to protect a young prospect for the future, though.

Arrghhh. The uncertainty is killing me.

Torre was quoted directly that Bubba would be called up.

When did he say that?

I remember back when Bubba was DFA'd, Torre said they'd "probably" call him up in September. That was a long time ago, though.
