Royals Flushed

September 6, 2006: N.Y. Yankees 8, Kansas City 3

Randy Johnson took a no-hitter into the 6th inning. But DeJesus, who had been a pest on defense, showing off his canon arm and great wheels, proved to be an equal pest on offense, hitting a triple to CF. The Unit looked almost relieved; I don't think he wanted to pitch nine innings. He was clearly tired.

Melky Cabrera and Johnny Damon have also been looking a big draggy. Joe should try to give them a day off here or there. Maybe when Kevin Thompson joins the team. (Would have been a great night to put Bubba in...if they'd called him up. Mutter, grumble.)

Jorge Posada had a great night. Two three-run homers. And a walk.

Rookie Aníbal Sánchez actually did pitch a no-hitter. It was the first in MLB since Randy Johnson threw a perfect game May 18, 2004. (You think Boston might be having a few regrets about trading Sánchez for Josh Beckett?)

The Marlins are really an amazing team. No payroll, nothing expected of them this year...but here they are, contending. Too bad the owner doesn't seem to appreciate the miracle Girardi is working down there.

When Torre retires, I wouldn't mind seeing Girardi take over the Yankees.
