Never Say Die

September 4, 2006: N.Y. Yankees 12, Kansas City 5

I confess, I gave up on this game. I didn't stop watching it, but down 5-1 in the 7th...it seemed out of reach. Even though four runs is not a lot, the Yankees were just not getting anything going against Hudson. I was resigned to a loss.

I forgot how gawd-awful the Royals' bullpen was. Once Hudson was gone, it was a whole different ballgame. The Yankees scored ten (10!) runs in the 8th inning. It was crazy. They batted around, and then some. I was starting to think the inning would never end. Unreal.

Aaron Guiel was a longtime Royal. When he came to bat, he got cheers from the Kansas City fans, which was nice to see. It was his first return to KC since he was DFA'd. He said he wasn't as affected by the homecoming as he thought he'd be...because he landed in a much better situation than the one he left. I guess he's not pining for the Royals much.

It was Star Wars night at the ballpark. No doubt scheduled to coincide with the arrival of the "Evil Empire." Chewbacca threw out the first pitch, Darth Vader was on the PA system, and there were Ewoks in the stands.

Jason Giambi shaved off his mustache mid-game. It was bizarre. One at bat, he had a caterpillar on his upper lip, the next, it was gone. I was wondering if it had run off with the Ewoks. He said later that he was hoping making a change would get him out of his slump. So he went into the clubhouse and shaved it off. One of the advantages of DHing, I guess.
