The Ghost of Ernesto

September 2, Minnesota 6, N.Y. Yankees 1

Ernesto is no longer a hurricane or even a tropical storm, but its winds and rains still wreaked havoc all over the eastern U.S. Many games were delayed or cancelled (as were the U.S. Open matches scheduled for Saturday).

I thought for sure this game would be rained out. The forecast called for heavy rain all day. But they did manage to play most of the game. It was the bottom of the 8th when a rain delay was called; 45 minutes later, they put it in the books.

If the score was still 2-1 when play was suspended, I'd have been irate. But the Twinkies put up a four-spot in the top of the 8th, making a comeback unlikely. I was just as happy to see the game over. It was a lousy day for baseball. The stiff wind blowing in toward the plate robbed the Yanks of a couple of homeruns, and made fielding an adventure.

September 2, Toledo Mudhens 4, Columbus Clippers 1

The Clippers lost their last home game. And Bubba didn't help. He had a pretty lousy night. Not only did he go 0 for 5 at the plate, he misplayed a ball in the crucial 4th inning. As in the Bronx, the wind made fielding an adventure in the Coop. Perhaps burned one too many times on balls that dropped in shallower than expected, Bubba came in on a ball that ended up going over his head. Two runs scored, and eventually, two more. (Not that it was all Bubba's fault. You give up two doubles, a single, and a HBP in one inning, and runs are bound to score.)

All in all, it was just one of those days. Best to forget it, and move on.
