Bubba and newcomer Bobby Abreu celebrate the victoryAugust 3, 2006: N.Y. Yankees 8, Toronto 1 That refers to both the weather and the Yankees. Both were blistering today. The weather is supposed to cool down; the Yanks, hopefully, will not.
New guy Cory Lidle did well today. Okay, the Jays don't exactly have a killer lineup. But "American Lidle" looked a lot better than Chacon or Ponson has lately (or even Wright, frankly).
(Speaking of Chacon, he had his first start for Pittsburgh today, and did well. For him. As usual, he was constantly working in and out of trouble. In the end, though, he only gave up one run, and got the win.)
Bubba again came into today's game as a defensive replacement for Johnny Damon, this time at the top of the 8th inning. He had a couple of fly balls to chase down, including one where he ranged way into the left field gap. (Melky seems to be getting used to Bubba's speed; they avoided a collision at least. ;-)
Nick Green started at 2B today. Many fans were wondering if this was Torre's "kiss of death." It's been noticed that Joe likes to get one last look at players who are about to be cut. Cano will be coming off the DL soon, which likely means Green will be DFA'd.
Nick didn't do anything to avert that fate today. He went 0 for 4, with two strikeouts and 4 LOB.
According to the
Hartford Courant, Nick and Bubba helped with Pavano's rehab:
Carl Pavano threw batting practice, which was staged more like a simulated game, with Nick Green and Bubba Crosby alternating at-bats. Pavano threw 25 pitches, sat, then threw 20 as Torre, pitching coach Ron Guidry and several teammates, including Randy Johnson, watched. Pavano, who had a bone chip in his right elbow removed May 25, will repeat this step Wednesday, then the Yankees will consider minor league starts.
I assume it was Nick and Bubba because they wanted a lefty and a righty, and both are probably happy to get some extra BP in. Even in this beastly weather.
